An interactive artwork – The microscopic view of an Aloe leaf (Aloe arborescens) displayed on a circular canvas with a black rind to mimic the view through the ocular lenses of a microscope. The magnifying glass encourages interaction and participation between the artwork and the viewer, symbolizing deeper introspection and outward reflection.
The ocular view shows an Aloe leaf under a halogen lamp, exciting fluorescence. Chlorophyll fluoresces red, creating a vibrant display, while yellows come from the microscope’s illuminator. The cell walls work in synchrony, giving structure and encapsulating the cytoplasm. Aloe latex fluoresces turquoise, contrasting with the warmer red and peach colours, highlighting the dramatic beauty of the unseen world.
As the aloe leaves become older and eventually die, they leave a protective armour around the base of the crown. Symbolically I can see this as our elders, the people who care and the knowledge they share with us. They give us the tools to navigate and protect ourselves in this world.
The fluidity in plant cells shows constant change, mirroring life’s cycle of growth, death, and renewal. Microscopy reveals abundant textures, colours, and curved lines, creating a kaleidoscopic effect. The beauty and depth this creates on a two dimensional glass slide is extraordinary and I can describe it as a celebration that becomes part of the observer who can at last truly see this world.
